1. There are two types of ultraviolet light – UVB and UVA.

2. UVB is a short, intense wave of energy, stimulating melanocytes in your skin to produce the pigment called melanin.

3. While we all have the same number of melanocytes in our body, about 5 million, we each produce different amounts of melanin.

4. The greater the amount of melanin the higher your tanning potential.

5. UVA is a longer ray that penetrates the skin more deeply and slowly than UVB. The melanin in your skin absorbs the UVA rays, turning the pigment brown.

6. A proper mixture of ultraviolet light will trigger melanocytes in your skin to start churning out melanin and than turn your overall pigment darker.

7. It has recently been shown that massage therapy warms up the melanocytes in our bodies to produce slightly higher amounts of melanin. Solares has chosen to feature 2 Hydro Massage machines for those UV tanners wishing to reach deeper skin tones than previously thought possible.

8. The sun radiates a higher percentage of UVB than does the most basic indoor UV tanning machine. Overexposure to this wave is what causes burning.

9. When we tan outdoors we put on sunscreen that blocks both UVB and UVA while it is really only the excessive exposure to UVB that we wish to avoid.

10. Indoor tanning lotions do not contain SPF qualities because indoor tanning machines provide a more proper mixture of ultraviolet light for optimum tanning results.

11. While tanning you must protect your eyes from irreversible damage with either sunglasses, sunscreen with SPF on your eyelids, or wink-ease. Your eyelids are too thin and do not block UV rays from reaching all parts of your eyes.

12. Your lips do not produce any melanin and need SPF protection in the form of lip balm or sunscreen.

13. The proper mixture of UVB to UVA is believed to be 5% to 95% respectively.

14. Most entry level machines on the market today generate a mixture comprising roughly 10% of UVB rays. For this reason, Solares has chosen not to feature any entry level UV tanning machines.

15. Any UV tanning will age your skin prematurely. Burning your skin is the fast track to looking like grandma and granddad. However, while in a controlled environment you are less likely to burn while still obtaining the desired skin tone. In addition, Solares features an anti-aging and skin tightening UV tanning line.

16. For those of you not wanting even the slightest affect of premature ageing from UV tanning, Solares offers aloe based spray tanning machines. Hakuna Matata!
